The Green Shack - 2504 E. Fremont St. - started out making fried chicken dinners for Bolder Dam workers for 75 cents. The exterior still stands if you want to check it out.

Ye Golden Lion Tavern (1907) - 1041 4th Ave. Now the Hard Rock Cafe. This was originally a men's only tavern. San Diego has done a wonderful job with the gas lamp quarter, but I kind of miss the old dives. Despite my appreciation of the interior design of the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, this place should have kept more of the original interior than they did when remodeling.
La Avenida Cafe - 1315 Orange Ave. Coronado, CA - famous for Mexican murals inside.
John's Waffle Shop - 7906 Girard Ave. This was a great little place to have breakfast. It was always crowded so I don't know why it closed. There are very few remnants of the La Jolla where everything didn't have to be ultra-chic and high priced. At least they can't mess with the beach!

Lubach's - This was opened by Ray Lubach in 1958 at 2101 N. Harbor Dr. The most famous of his maitre d's was Dave Wolfe. The building still stands.
