Sardi's Restaurant
|
Owned by Eddie Brandstatter with food by Dave Covey - see the restaurateur page - 6315 Hollywood Blvd. Toward the end it included music and dancing. Now the Cave Adult Theater (although I think the original building burnt to the ground) - oh how the mighty have fallen. Later there was a restaurant "Zardi's" in the same locale. I believe that is the building that has unfortunately become the Cave Adult Theater. |

Scandia Restaurant
The Scandia building as it appears today. |
9040 Sunset (1946-1989). The original location was across the street, but they moved to 9040 Sunset in 1957. Very elegant - with paneled woods, copper and brass fixtures, bright red chairs, royal blue and white china and crystal vases. The principal decorations were coats of arms. The owner was Ken Hansen and his sister Teddy (who died in 1979). They were immigrants from Copenhagen. Chef des Cuisine in 1963, Chris Rasmussen. Specialties here were "Lammesaddel", "Viking Sword" and "Bof Med Log". The "Club of the Vikings" met here including Errol Flynn, Victor Borge, and Everett Crosby (Bing's brother and manager). |

Roxbury, Beverly Hills, CA Owned by Leon, Bernard, Martin and Jack Schwab (brothers). The first Schwab's drug store was downtown on 6th St. Yes, I know you've heard Lana Turner was not really discovered here (it was Top Hat Soda Shop in 1935 where she was discovered). There is a restaurant now using this name celebrating the tradition of this place. The interior of the original can be seen in the movie Sunset Boulevard. |

Thelma Todd's Sidewalk Cafe, Pacific Coast
Highway on the way to Malibu, Los Angeles,
CA
|
Standing eerily almost unchanged up to today is Thelma Todd's Sidewalk Cafe, one of the best preserved 1930's Nightclub exteriors (although this former den of inequity is now ironically owned by a religious group). Thelma Todd, the blonde actress seen in Marx Brother movies, opened this spot in the thirties. Rumored to have hidden gambling activities and connected to the Mob. Thelma Todd's mysterious death from carbon monoxide poisoning in her garage remains one of LA's great unsolved mysteries, up there with the murder of Elizabeth Short (the Black Dahlia), George Reeves mysterious death and the murder of director William Desmond Taylor. |
