Marcel & Jeanne's French Cafe
|
E. Lopez provides this excellent
information:
Marcel & Jeanne's French Cafe is located on the corner of Whittier Blvd and 22nd St in Montebello, and was sort of a French version of Musso & Frank . It had several themed dining rooms and bars with murals on the upper walls similar to the Musso and Frank Grill, but with images of the French countryside. Our family would have Sunday dinner here and the spiffy old servers wore the same type of red suits as Musso and Frank's.
My grandfather was good friends with the
maître d' as they both came from the
same Catalan region of northern Spain
near the French border. The menu was
similar to Taix in Los Angeles, but the
quality was much better. Attached is a
photo of the abandoned building. It
closed around the late 70s-early 80s if
I recall correctly, but the structure
still stands in a sad state of
disrepair. I wish someone would
resurrect this neat old gem one day!

Collection of Kathleen B. |
5507 Melrose and 1600 N. Argyle (at Selma) (1928). Formerly "the Melrose Grotto". Became famous nationally as a star hangout when it was mentioned in an "I love Lucy" episode. It disappeared with all traces hidden away by landscaping almost overnight it seemed. Founded by Nick Slavich (died 1979). Matt Alan recently reminded me that Nickodell's closed in 1993. |

The next owner was H. C. Stevens . Long term owners were Nathan Adelman and his two brothers Joe and Manny. It survived up to the 1960s I believe. Jack Kallan was a later owner (who also owned Carolina Pines). Signature dish was frog legs. |
