Chasen's Restaurant (1937)

9039 Beverly Blvd. A relative of mine worked there and knows how to make the original chili! It's to die for. Elizabeth Taylor supposedly had the Chili shipped to her on the set of Cleopatra. This restaurant was a favorite of President Reagan and Frank Sinatra. Continental food (along with Hobo Steak and Chili!) Bristol Farms which took over the site of Chasen's was thoughtful enough to preserve a bit of the interior (see left) as their coffee shop. See my great books page for a new book out about the restaurant.

Fortunately, the new owners have left the interior intact, so you can continue to enjoy the interior. I can't remember what the new name is however.  Update: It was Trilussa and unfortunately it has closed. It appears the interior is gutted. Oh well!

Chili Bowl

There was once a chain of 18 Chili Bowl Restaurants created by Arthur Whizin (the Chili Bowl King). One of the first fast food chains, long before Mickey D's. A nice bit of programmatic architecture, the restaurants of course, looked like Chili Bowls.

Some of the treats sold here: "Egg Royals", Tamales, a "size" (hamburger with either Beans or Chili burger) and of course - Chili!

Don the Beachcomber Restaurant

1727 N. McCadden & Hotel Marina del Rey, 13534 Bali Way & 3901 E. Coast Hwy, Corona del Mar.  Also in the Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas. Perhaps the first Tiki restaurant. Started by Ernest Raymond Beaumont-Gantt (Don the Beachcomber was his nickname), and his wife Cora Irene Sund (a former waitress at the Tick Tock Tea Room).  Apparently there is a recreated Don the Beachcomber in Disney's California adventure - if you go there, let me know if they did a good job in recreating it. One of the great things that this and the Seven Seas did was have "rain on the roof" - whether it be raining in Los Angeles or not. Of course, when it rains in Los Angeles, in comes down in Torrance.

Earl Carroll's Theatre-Restaurant (Gordon B. Kaufmann designer)

6230 Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles, California. One of the biggest and most famous Hollywood nightclubs. Earl Carroll was a Broadway producer and the place was best known for its beautiful showgirls. It was established on 12-26-38.  It had two stages that turned in a circle, with 80 foot diameters. Three stages floated in water, and several platforms could be lowered out of sight. Almost 1000 people could fit into the place for quite a party. Marcel Lamaze was in charge of cuisine.

Sort of in the style of the Chinese Theater, Carroll started putting the autographs of stars on the side of his club.  They were removed in the 1980s.

It reopened as Frank Senne's Moulin Rouge on 12-25-53.  It closed as a night club in 1960.

Now it houses Nickelodeon. The building is rumored to be endangered.

Eaton's Chicken House Restaurant The Eaton Chicken Houses were at 3550 Wilshire Blvd. at Ardmore, Los Angeles, California. Also La Cienega at 8500 Burton Way. Farmer John's Chicken Dinners Restaurant 630 N. Sepulveda, Bel Air or West Los Angeles.

Here is some extensive detective work by Kathleen B. on this place:

It is listed in a 1954 Ford Motor book that I have. The place specialized in dishes such as prime rib and steaks. It also had an outdoor dining patio. Farmer John's was at 630 N. Sepulveda as you show, but the city was West Los Angeles rather than in Bel Air as you have it listed.

We had lunch at the lovely Bel Air Bar & Grill a few months ago. It used to be another restaurant years ago. I had wondered if it was once Farmer John's. However, FJ's address was 630 N. Sepulveda and
it's address is 662 N. Sepulveda, Los Angeles. There was nothing at the 630 address. I suppose the address could have been changed, but this is a wild guess.

I just called the Bel Air Bar & Grill to ask what restaurant used to be there. I was told it had been the Fine Affaire ( French), and before that - it was called Farmhouse. So, maybe it was Farmer John's?

Decided to look in one of my books. Gourmet magazine put out a little book in 1946-1947 that listed good restaurants in the USA. There is a listing for: Bel Air Farm House - 666 North Sepulveda Blvd, West Los Angeles. It says that the place recently opened. It "serves the finest quality beef, pork, lamb, etc. Charcoal broiling done where customer can watch procedure." It also says it was a "country restaurant and grocery store, where customer can purchase meats in the meat department of the market adjoining."

Farmer John's, Farmhouse, Bel Air Farm House, Fine Affair - none are listed in my 1967 phone book. I've always been glad I saved this book, wish I would have saved a couple of earlier ones.

I think my bit of research shows:

1) Sometime around 1946, the Bel Air Farm House opened. It had an adjacent grocery store.

2) By 1954, the place was Farmer John's and had a motel attached.

3) Later, it is possible a restaurant called the Farmhouse was there. I actually think I remember a restaurant with this kind of name being there in the 1970's. You used to be able to see the restaurant from the San Diego Freeway (405) when you drove by, not sure if you still can with the sound walls being put up all over.

4) Fine Affair, a French restaurant, was there for a time.

5) Bel Air Bar & Grill is there now.

The fact there was lodging and a market may explain why the address has changed a bit. Here is the link to the current restaurant: http://www.belairbarandgrill.com/
